Singapore no.4 in survey: Most expensive city for expats

Asia has become one of the most expensive regions for people working abroad, according to a new survey, with its major cities accounting for half of the top 10 costliest expat destinations.

Singapore remained at 4th place this year, Mercer said in its annual Cost of Living Survey on Tuesday, with Luanda, Angola, topping the list.

Hong Kong climbed one place from last year to become the world’s second-most expensive place for expats. Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul also made the shortlist.

By contrast, Tokyo, ranked the most expensive city for expats in 2012, fell four places from last year to No. 11 due to a slump in the Japanese currency after a massive easing programme by its central bank.

Leading the rankings was the Angolan capital Luanda, which retained its top spot due to the high price of imported goods and security services used by many foreigners. The survey by the Mercer consulting group compares the cost of over 200 items in 207 cities, including housing, food, transport and entertainment. It takes New York as its base city for comparison, and measures currency movements against the dollar, which has appreciated significantly from a year ago as the health of the US economy has improved.

Singapore the 4th most expensive city for Expats

Singapore has climbed one rung from fifth place last year to become the fourth most expensive city in the world for expatriates, according to a report by research firm Mercer.

Singapore is also the second-priciest city in the Asia Pacific region, beaten only by Hong Kong, Mercer found in its annual cost of living survey.

The most expensive city for expatriates was Luanda in Angola, which is in southern Africa, for the second year in a row.

That was followed by N’Djamena in Chad, which is a landlocked country in central Africa. Hong Kong came in third.

More options for expats in new international schools

When Britain’s Dulwich College opens its doors here in a few months, it will already have waiting lists for some classes.

Gems World Academy Singapore, also opening this year, has launched more classes for certain grade levels.

The new entrants to the international school scene here will join at least three others which started operations or opened additional campuses here in the past five years: Stamford American International School, the Canadian International School and the United World College of Southeast Asia.

Others, such as the Lycee Francais de Singapour (LFS), the German European School Singapore and the Overseas Family School have plans to add campuses or move to larger premises within the next three years.

At French School LFS, demand has grown so much that the current campus at Serangoon had to be extended three times since 1999.

Stamford American has grown from 76 to 2000 over students. EDB estimated that there are more than 30 international schools here. These schools have about 40,000 students as of last year.
